Point, also known as the Eye Peninsula, or in Gaelic An Rubha is connected to the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus called the Braighe. It’s located approximately 4 miles from Stornoway, the main town of the Outer Hebrides.
Located across the Braighe the Ui Church offers a unique blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. It provides a perfect starting point for exploring the island’s rich cultural tapestry. The church is the gateway to Point and overlooks a stunning sandy beach, that forms part of the isthmus.

As you stroll along the path leading to the Ui Church, you will encounter the poignant memorial commemorating the Aignish land riot. Here, two elegantly tapered stone monuments stand in opposition, their jagged forms symbolising the tension of a bygone era, sharply silhouetted against the expansive sky. This tribute honours the land riot of 1888, a pivotal moment when local crofters, driven by years of exploitation from landowners, took a stand for their rights. Across the island, similar memorials can be found in various villages. Each step along this path invites you to reflect on the past while celebrating the vibrant culture that flourishes today.
